CO2 Performance ladder - level 1

Working together to reduce CO₂ emissions

At Beddeleem, climate and energy policy has been developed and strengthened over many years. Since 2011, our environmental and energy policy has been embedded in our management systems through ISO 14001, with a focus on energy efficiency, reducing our energy consumption and continuous improvement.

Over the years, we have expanded our efforts to include our own renewable energy generation, the electrification of our vehicle fleet and transport, and increasingly comprehensive monitoring of energy use and emissions.

Since 2020, we have further strengthened our climate approach through the Taking Climate Action Silver Company label. As part of this commitment, we monitor our CO₂ emissions annually, set reduction targets and track concrete actions.

Achieving certification to the CO₂ Performance Ladder, Handbook 4.0, Level 1 marks another step forward. Many of the foundations were already in place. The CO₂ Performance Ladder brings them together in an even more structured approach and strengthens our data quality, transparency, governance and systematic monitoring of our reduction targets. This directly supports our sustainability ambition ‘Contribute to a Cool Planet’.

What does the CO₂ Performance Ladder add?

The CO₂ Performance Ladder brings our existing efforts together in a structured management cycle focused on insight, reduction, communication and collaboration. Level 1 strengthens our understanding of our energy consumption and emissions, the basis for our reduction targets and the systematic monitoring of our performance. We follow the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, directly linking measurement and reporting to concrete actions, evaluation and adjustments.

Our ambitions

Based on our carbon footprint and energy review, we have set concrete targets for the coming years:

  • Reduce scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions by 43% by 2030, compared with 2023.
  • Reduce scope 1 and 2 CO₂ emissions by at least 90% by 2050, compared with 2023.
  • Increase the share of our own solar energy generation that we consume on site to 55% by 2030.
  • Transition to 100% renewable energy by 2045.

How do we make a difference?

Our approach combines technology, innovation and employee engagement. Our investments include:

  • energy monitoring and data-driven tracking of consumption and emissions;
  • energy efficiency and the optimisation of buildings, processes and installations;
  • our own generation and use of renewable energy;
  • further electrification of our vehicle fleet and expansion of our charging infrastructure;
  • life cycle assessment and a better understanding of the climate impact of materials;
  • collaboration with suppliers, customers and knowledge partners to further reduce emissions across our value chain.

Transparency and continuous improvement

Climate policy goes beyond setting targets. We systematically track our performance through measurement, reporting, internal and external audits, and periodic evaluations. Where necessary, we adjust our actions and priorities. Management is committed to providing the resources, expertise and follow-up needed to support our targets.

Through transparent communication, we make both our progress and the challenges visible. This makes climate management a process of continuous improvement within our organisation.

From our own operations to our value chain

Having achieved Level 1, we are continuing our journey towards Level 2. This brings an increasing focus on scope 3: indirect emissions across our value chain.

This broader scope is particularly relevant to Beddeleem. Our carbon analysis confirms that the vast majority of our climate impact occurs outside our own operations, in our value chain. Alongside energy and mobility, material choices, product development, purchasing decisions, transport and collaboration with suppliers are therefore essential to achieving further emissions reductions. We aim to deepen this understanding and translate it into targeted actions together with our customers, suppliers and other value chain partners.

Contribute to a Cool Planet

For Beddeleem, the CO₂ Performance Ladder represents another step in a journey that has been underway for years. Through ‘Contribute to a Cool Planet’, we continue to work towards a lower climate impact by using energy and materials more intelligently, further reducing our emissions and developing solutions to tomorrow’s challenges together with our employees, customers, suppliers and partners.
